ব-ফলা, য-ফলা, র-ফলা, ম-ফলা — What Each Fola Means & How to Type It
The four Bengali folas explained with side-by-side visual forms, Avro and Bijoy shortcuts, how they differ from reph (র্), and 30 practice words.

What Is a Fola?
A fola (ফলা) is the reduced half-form that certain Bengali consonants take when they appear as the second element in a conjunct. Four consonants can become folas: ব, য, র, and ম.
The key distinction from other conjunct forms: folas are always recognisable shapes — not invisible like hasant — and each has a specific visual pattern.
The Four Folas in Detail
1. ব-ফলা (্ব)
ব takes a subscript curved form below the preceding consonant.
Examples: বিশ্ব, স্বপ্ন, সত্ত্ব, অশ্ব
In Avro: ব-ফলা appears naturally when w or b follows another consonant sequence — e.g., bishwo → বিশ্ব
In Bijoy: Specific key position for ব-ফলা.
2. য-ফলা (্য)
য takes an angular subscript form.
Examples: বাক্য, সত্য, বিদ্যা, ত্যাগ, বিজয়
In Avro: Type y after the first consonant — e.g., baky → বাক্য
In Bijoy: য-ফলা is on its own fixed key.
3. র-ফলা (্র)
র takes a diagonal subscript stroke below the preceding consonant.
Examples: প্রতি, ক্রম, গ্রাম, শ্রম, দ্রুত
In Avro: Type r in the phonetic sequence — e.g., pro → প্র
Important: র-ফলা (র after a consonant) is different from reph (র্) (র before a consonant). Reph forms a curl on top of the following consonant; র-ফলা attaches below the preceding one.
4. ম-ফলা (্ম)
ম-ফলা is the rarest of the four and appears in a small set of words.
Examples: ব্রহ্ম, পদ্ম, আত্মা, রশ্মি, লক্ষ্মী
In Avro: Type mo after the consonant cluster — e.g., brahmo → ব্রহ্ম
Fola vs Reph — the Key Distinction
This confuses many learners:
| Fola | Reph | |
|---|---|---|
| র's position | র comes after the base consonant | র comes before the following consonant |
| Visual form | Diagonal stroke below | Curl above the next consonant |
| Example | প্রতি (র-ফলা) | অর্ক (reph) |

How Folas Connect to the Broader System
Folas are one of three special conjunct mechanisms in Bengali — alongside hasant (্) and reph. Together they account for the visual complexity of the script.

Frequently asked questions
- What is a fola in Bengali?
- A fola is a half-form consonant "rider" — ্ব, ্য, ্র or ্ম attached to the preceding consonant. Structurally it is a conjunct (consonant + hasant + ব/য/র/ম), but it renders as a small modifier shape.
- How do I type য-ফলা in Avro?
- Type y after the consonant: z gives the full letter য, while y gives the fola ্য — so bytha produces ব্যথা. In Bijoy, য-ফলা is Shift+Z after the consonant.
- What is the difference between র-ফলা and reph (র্)?
- A single r after a consonant produces র-ফলা below it (pr → প্র); a double r before a consonant produces reph above it (rrp → র্প). They are different marks in different positions.
- How do I type ব-ফলা and ম-ফলা?
- In Avro, w after a consonant gives ব-ফলা (bishw → বিশ্ব) and m after a consonant gives ম-ফলা (atma → আত্মা). In Bijoy, use H for ব-ফলা and g + m for ম-ফলা.
