Hasant (্) Explained: The Bengali Halant Character That Powers Every Conjunct

What Is Hasant?

Hasant (্) is the most important diacritic in the Bengali script. It suppresses the inherent vowel (অ) that every Bengali consonant carries by default.

In Bengali, each consonant comes with an implicit "o" sound:

• ক is read as "kô"
• ত is read as "tô"

When you write ক্ত, you are saying: remove the "ô" from কô and fuse it directly with তô → ক্ত ("ktô").

Hasant performs that vowel suppression. It is the invisible glue behind every conjunct consonant.

When Hasant Is Visible vs Hidden

Hasant behaves in two distinct ways:

Visible hasant

At the end of a word or in explicit phonemic writing, hasant appears as the small subscript curl: ক্ (consonant with no following vowel).

Hidden hasant (inside conjuncts)

When two consonants join to form a conjunct, the hasant fuses them and disappears visually. ক + ্ + ত = ক্ত — the hasant is doing its job but is not rendered as a separate glyph.

Hasant in Avro Phonetic

In Avro, hasant is largely automatic. When you type kkh, Avro knows you want ক + hasant + ষ = ক্ষ, not two separate consonants. The phonetic rules handle hasant placement internally.

When you need explicit hasant — for example, at a word ending — use the backtick (`) key or the dedicated hasant key in Avro's settings.

Hasant in Bijoy

In Bijoy, hasant is the G key.

To type ক্ত:

1. Press the ক key
2. Press G (hasant)
3. Press the ত key
