What Are Vowel Signs (কার)?

Bengali vowel signs (কার, pronounced kar) are diacritics that attach to a consonant to modify its vowel sound. Independent vowels (আ, ই, উ, etc.) are used at the start of a word or standing alone; after a consonant, the vowel sign form is used instead.

Example: ক + া = কা, ক + ি = কি, ক + ী = কী
