Bijoy Keyboard Layout: Complete Guide & Chart

The Bijoy keyboard is the traditional Bengali typing layout used across Bangladesh — in offices, newspapers, and government work — for decades. If you learned to type Bangla in a Bangladeshi school or typing institute, you almost certainly learned Bijoy. This guide explains what Bijoy is, gives you the full keyboard layout, and compares it to the modern Avro Phonetic method.

What is the Bijoy layout?

Bijoy (বিজয়, "victory") is a fixed keyboard layout for Bengali, created by Ananda Computers and popularised by Mostafa Jabbar. Each Bengali letter is mapped to a specific key on the English QWERTY keyboard — for example, q = ক, i = ন, c = ম. It is not phonetic: you must memorise where each letter sits.

Bijoy originally used a legacy (non-Unicode) encoding paired with the Bijoy font family (Siyam Rupali, etc.). Modern Bijoy software can also output Unicode, but the classic Bijoy workflow is legacy-encoded — which is why text typed in Bijoy often looks garbled until the Bijoy font is applied.

The Bijoy layout maps the main Bengali letters to these keys (lowercase = base letter; the Shift layer gives related letters/vowels):

KeyLetterKeyLetterKeyLetter
qaz
wsx
eত/Tdc
rfvর (reph)
tgbজ (fola)
yhn
ujm
ik,
ol.। (dari)
pি (i-kar);/?

Vowel signs (কার) and conjuncts are typed with modifier keys (often Shift + a letter). Because the full chart is large, the fastest way to learn it is a printable Bijoy chart pinned above your keyboard while you practise.

This is a simplified chart — the complete Bijoy layout (including all vowel signs, conjuncts, and the Shift layer) is best learned from the official Bijoy software's built-in chart or a printed poster.

Bijoy finger placement

Like English touch typing, Bijoy uses the home row as the anchor:

  • Left hand: A S D F region (চ জ ব ন)
  • Right hand: J K L ; region
  • Each finger reaches for its assigned column of keys.

The muscle memory is the hard part — once your fingers know where ক, খ, গ, ঘ live, speed follows. Plan on 3–4 weeks of daily practice to reach a usable Bangla typing speed on Bijoy.

Bijoy vs Avro

Rule of thumb: if a workplace or exam requires Bijoy, learn Bijoy. For everything else on a modern device, Avro Phonetic is faster to pick up and produces clean Unicode that works everywhere.

Download Bijoy

Bijoy is distributed as paid commercial software (the popular version being Bijoy Bayanno). To use it:

  1. Purchase/download Bijoy Bayanno from an authorised source.
  2. Install it on Windows and activate the license.
  3. Select the Bijoy keyboard and a Bijoy-compatible font.
  4. Type — and remember to set the correct font when sharing documents, since legacy Bijoy text needs a Bijoy font to display correctly.

For learners who want to practise Bangla typing without buying software, learntype.app offers a Bijoy-style typing engine in the browser — no install required — alongside the phonetic Avro engine.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bijoy the same as Unicode? No. Classic Bijoy uses a legacy (non-Unicode) encoding; modern Unicode Bangla is a different standard. That's why Bijoy text can look broken without the Bijoy font, and why converters exist between the two.

Bijoy or Avro — which should I learn? Learn Bijoy if your office, exam, or workplace requires it. Learn Avro Phonetic for fast, everyday Unicode Bangla on any device.

Can I type Bijoy online without installing software? Yes — learntype.app's Bangla typing practice runs a Bijoy-style engine in the browser, so you can learn the layout without buying the software.

Why does my Bijoy text look like boxes/garbage elsewhere? Legacy Bijoy text needs a Bijoy-compatible font to render. Convert it to Unicode to make it work everywhere, or open it in an app with the Bijoy font installed.
