Why Adults Find Typing Hard to Learn

Adults face two challenges children do not: existing habits (hunt-and-peck technique built over years) and less neural plasticity. The habit problem is the bigger one. Retraining muscle memory that has been reinforced for a decade requires deliberate, consistent effort over 8–12 weeks.

The good news: adults learn faster than children when they commit, because adults understand why the technique matters and can practice with more discipline.

Week 1: Foundations — Unlearn and Reset

Goal: Stop old habits. Start home row.

Day 1–2: Read about touch typing fundamentals. Set up your keyboard and posture correctly.

Day 3–5: Home row only — ASDF JKL;. Type nothing else. Accept that you will be at 8–12 WPM. This is correct.

Day 6–7: Add E and I (middle fingers reaching up from D and K).

The rule for week 1: If you catch yourself looking at the keyboard or using the wrong finger, stop and restart the line.

Week 2: Building Speed

Goal: Full alphabet. Reach 20 WPM on common words.

Day 8–10: Add remaining top row keys (Q W R T Y U O P).

Day 11–12: Add bottom row (Z X C V B N M).

Day 13–14: Numbers and punctuation. Common symbols: , . ! ? '

Week 3: Accuracy Training

Goal: Consistent 95%+ accuracy across full sentences.

This week, never push speed. Type every sentence slowly enough to make zero errors. Use Typing Practice Paragraphs at beginner level.

Identify your three most error-prone keys. Drill them specifically for 5 minutes at the start of each session.

Week 4: Real-World Practice

Goal: 30+ WPM on real text. Typing feels natural, not mechanical.

Type real things: emails, documents, messages — using correct technique only. This is where the learning accelerates because motivation is intrinsic.

Take a timed test daily and record results. See How Fast Should You Type? for context on where your score sits.

The Most Important Rule for Adults

Never go back to hunt-and-peck for "just this one thing." Every regression undoes days of progress. Commit to technique 100% for 4 weeks. After that, it is automatic and you will never want to go back.
