Required WPM by Exam — Explained

SSC formula: Net WPM = (Keystrokes ÷ 5 − Full Mistakes − Half Mistakes ÷ 2) ÷ minutes. Backspace corrections count as half mistakes. In real SSC software (TCS iON), backspace is available but penalised.

RRB formula: Net WPM with error deduction. Backspace is disabled in some RRB tests — practice with backspace off.

The practical rule: Aim for 10–15 WPM above the requirement. Exam pressure, unfamiliar passages, and time stress all reduce real-world performance below practice scores.

How the Exam Is Conducted

  1. A passage is displayed on screen
  2. You type the passage in a text box
  3. Timer counts down
  4. System calculates net WPM and error percentage
  5. Qualifying threshold must be met (speed + accuracy)

Most exams require 90–95% accuracy. Speed without accuracy does not qualify.

30-Day Preparation Plan

Week 1: Baseline test + technique audit. Fix posture and home row. Target: 25 WPM clean.

Week 2: Speed drills with exam passages. Disable backspace. Target: 30 WPM.

Week 3: Timed mock tests at exam duration (10 min). Build stamina. Target: 33 WPM.

Week 4: Final polish. Two mock tests daily at exam conditions. Target: 38+ WPM (buffer above requirement).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Practising only at 1-minute duration (exam is 10 minutes — stamina matters)
  • Using backspace freely (many exams penalise or disable it)
  • Switching fonts or layouts in final week
  • Not reading ahead in the passage while typing
