Frequently asked questions

Quick answers, grouped by topic. If your question isn't here, contact us.

Below are the questions we hear most often, grouped into five topics: getting started, Bangla typing, English typing, technical and device questions, and account and progress questions. If you don't find your answer here, drop us a lineand we'll usually reply within a day or two.

Getting started

Do I need to sign up to use LearnType?+

No. You can start any lesson or game immediately without creating an account. The only reason to sign up is to sync your progress across devices and appear on the leaderboard — without an account, your progress is stored locally in your browser. We recommend creating a free account once you're sure you'll keep practising, so you don't lose your history.

Which course should I start with?+

If you want to type Bangla, start with the Avro Phonetic track — it's the fastest to pick up because you type Bangla the way it sounds (type "ami" and you get "আমি"). If you specifically need Bijoy for government or publishing work, start with the Bijoy track. If you only want to improve your English typing, start with the English QWERTY home-row lessons. Each track begins with the home row, so you can always try one and switch later without losing anything.

How long until I see results?+

Most people who practise 15 minutes a day reach 30 WPM within two weeks and 50 WPM within six weeks on their chosen layout. Beyond 60 WPM is a multi-month commitment that depends on daily consistency rather than talent. You'll feel faster and more accurate within the first few sessions because the early lessons quickly lock in the home-row muscle memory that most self-taught typists never properly build.

How much should I practise each day?+

About 15 minutes a day is the sweet spot. Short, frequent sessions build muscle memory faster than long, rare ones — fifteen minutes daily for two weeks beats a single two-hour session on Saturday. Each lesson is only 3–7 minutes long so you can fit one or two into a commute or lunch break, and Smart Practice sessions scale to whatever time you have.

Is LearnType really free?+

Yes. The full curriculum, all 13 games, analytics, and multiplayer races are free for individuals. There is no credit card required and no upsell on any feature. See the pricing page for the full breakdown of what's included and how we stay free.

Bangla typing

Can I type Bangla without installing any software?+

Yes. LearnType's typing engine runs entirely in your browser, so you do not need to install Avro, Bijoy, or any other Bangla input software to practise on our site. When you type in a lesson, our engine converts your keystrokes into Bangla in real time. (If you later want to type Bangla in other apps like Word or email, you will need to install an input method there — but for learning on LearnType, nothing to install.)

What's the difference between Avro and Bijoy?+

Avro Phonetic is a phonetic input method: you type Bangla the way it sounds using Roman letters, and Avro converts it to Bangla ("ami" → "আমি"). It's intuitive, fast to learn, and dominant on the internet. Bijoy is a fixed keyboard layout modelled on the Bengali typewriter, where each physical key maps to a specific Bangla character regardless of sound; it's the standard in government offices, printing presses and professional publishing, and it is case-sensitive (Shift changes the character).

Which is better for beginners — Avro or Bijoy?+

For most beginners we recommend Avro. Because it's phonetic, you can start producing correct Bangla within minutes using spelling you already know, which keeps motivation high. Bijoy has a steeper learning curve because you must memorise a completely new key layout, but it's essential if your workplace requires it. If you're unsure, try the first Avro lesson and the first Bijoy lesson and see which feels right — switching is free.

Do I need a special keyboard to type Bangla?+

No. Any standard physical keyboard works for both Avro and Bijoy on LearnType, because our engine reads the keys you press and maps them in software. You don't need Bangla keycaps or stickers, and you don't need to change your operating system's keyboard settings. A regular English QWERTY keyboard is exactly what we design for.

English typing

Do you teach standard QWERTY touch typing?+

Yes. The English track teaches standard QWERTY touch typing — the layout used on virtually every English keyboard in the world. You'll start on the home row (ASDF JKL;), learn each finger's assigned keys, then progress through the full alphabet, capitals, numbers, punctuation, and finally longer passages that put it all together.

Can I learn Dvorak or other alternative layouts?+

Not yet. LearnType currently focuses on QWERTY for English (alongside Avro and Bijoy for Bangla). Dvorak, Colemak and other alternative layouts are on our long-term wishlist, but we don't have a shipping date. If an alternative layout is important to you, drop us a line on the contact page so we can gauge demand.

What's a good typing speed?+

Around 40 WPM is the average for a competent office worker and is enough for almost any job. 60 WPM is considered fast and comfortable, 80+ WPM is professional-grade, and 100+ WPM is competitive-typist territory. For most people, the practical goal is to type faster than they can hand-write, which sits around 30–40 WPM. Accuracy matters as much as speed — aim for 95% or higher before chasing raw WPM.

Why does my typing speed drop on real-world text?+

Because real-world text mixes in punctuation, capital letters, numbers and unfamiliar words that drills don't prepare you for. Once your core letter typing is solid, use Smart Practice passages, code snippets and stories rather than just alphabet drills — they deliberately include the symbols and shifts that trip people up, so your speed transfers to emails, essays and code.

Technical & devices

Does LearnType work on mobile phones and tablets?+

You can read lessons and manage your progress on mobile, but for actual typing practice you'll want a physical keyboard. Touch screens have very different ergonomics — there's no home row to anchor your fingers — and they don't build the same muscle memory as a real keyboard. A Bluetooth keyboard paired with a tablet works fine; a phone touchscreen does not.

Do I need to download or install anything?+

No. LearnType runs entirely in any modern web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Brave) on desktop or laptop. There's nothing to download, install, or update. If you can open a browser and visit our site, you have everything you need. We do cache lessons for offline use once they've loaded, so a flaky connection won't interrupt a session you've already started.

Can I use LearnType offline?+

Partially. Lessons can be cached for offline practice once they've loaded, so you can keep drilling on a plane or a train. However, progress sync, multiplayer races, AI-suggested Smart Practice, and the global leaderboard all require an internet connection because they talk to our servers in real time.

Is my data safe? Do you store my keystrokes?+

We store aggregate statistics per session — WPM, accuracy, error counts, and per-finger usage — tied to your account when you sign in. We do NOT store the raw stream of every keystroke you type, and we never sell user data to anyone. See the privacy page for the complete list of what we collect and why.

Which browser works best with LearnType?+

Any up-to-date Chromium-based browser (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc) or Firefox works well. Modern Safari on macOS and iPadOS is also fully supported. We use the Web Audio API for typing sounds and standard browser features throughout, so you don't need any plugins. Avoid very old browsers (Internet Explorer is not supported).

Account & progress

Can I track my progress across multiple devices?+

Yes. Create a free account (email + password or Google) and your lesson history, analytics and achievements sync across every device you sign in on. Without an account, progress is stored only in the local browser and won't carry over to a new computer. We recommend signing up once you're committed so you never lose your history.

Can I delete my account and all my data?+

Yes, completely. You can delete your account from the settings page, which removes your profile, lesson history, analytics, and any other data tied to your account. Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone, so make sure you mean it. If you just want to pause, you can also sign out without deleting anything.

What happens to my progress if I switch layouts?+

Each layout (Avro, Bijoy, English) has its own independent progress tracker, so switching layouts never erases your history in another layout — it's all preserved. You can learn Avro on weekdays and Bijoy on weekends, and both tracks will remember exactly where you left off. Switch any time from your profile.

Can I reset my progress and start over?+

Yes. You can reset your progress for any layout from the settings page, which clears your lesson history and analytics for that track and returns you to the first lesson. It does not affect your progress in other layouts. This is useful if you picked up bad habits and want to rebuild cleanly from the home row.

Do you offer achievements, badges or certificates?+

LearnType tracks your achievements and milestones (first lesson, 30 WPM, 7-day streak, and so on) inside your dashboard, and you can compete on the global leaderboard for your layout. We don't currently issue formal printable certificates, but if you're a school that needs completion reports, reach out — the Pro tier will include exportable per-student reports.
