Kruti Dev 010 is the most widely used legacy Hindi font for Indian typing exams, and for many aspirants a krutidev 010 font free download is the very first step of typing preparation. SSC, RRB, and many state-level recruitment tests have historically used Kruti Dev with the Remington layout, making it a must-have for candidates whose notification specifies it. It is freeware, installs in seconds, and reproduces the exact key positions of the traditional Hindi typewriter that these exams are built around.

Kruti Dev is legacy — know the difference

Kruti Dev is not Unicode. It maps Devanagari shapes onto ASCII characters, so text only displays correctly when the font is installed and you type with the Remington layout. This is the opposite of Mangal (Unicode), which works everywhere. In practice, that single fact drives most of the confusion candidates run into:

• Use Kruti Dev for SSC and state exams that specify it.
• Use Mangal for CPCT, Delhi High Court, and any modern Unicode requirement.

If you open a Kruti Dev document on a machine without the font, you will see Roman letters and symbols instead of Hindi — the bytes are ASCII, and only the Kruti Dev font draws Devanagari shapes over them. Likewise, pasting Kruti Dev text into a Unicode (Mangal) field produces gibberish, and pasting Unicode into a Kruti Dev field does the same. Keep each project in a single encoding.

How to install Kruti Dev 010

Windows — right-click the .ttf → Install, then select "Kruti Dev 010" in MS Word. To type it, use the Remington Hindi keyboard layout or a Kruti Dev typing tool.

After installing, verify it by typing a few keys with the Remington layout active and confirming Devanagari appears. If you see Roman characters instead, the font is selected but the layout is wrong — Kruti Dev needs the Remington key mapping, not a standard English keyboard. Note that 010 is one of many Kruti Dev variants (020, 040, and so on); exams almost always mean 010 unless stated otherwise, but confirm in the notification.

Because Kruti Dev rides on the Remington layout, the keys are arranged for the old Hindi typewriter rather than by sound. That makes early practice feel slow, but accuracy compounds: a clean, correct keystroke pattern is far easier to speed up later than a fast-but-sloppy one.
