How to Improve Your Typing Speed (From 30 to 80 WPM)
The structured plan to go from 30 to 80 WPM — accuracy-first method, three daily drills, weekly WPM targets, and the anticipation technique that breaks the 60 WPM ceiling.

Why 30 WPM Is the Plateau
Most typists reach 30 WPM and stop improving. The reason is almost always the same: they switched from deliberate practice to passive typing (just using the keyboard for work/chat) and stopped pushing technique.
Breaking through 30 WPM is not about practicing more. It is about practicing differently.
The Accuracy-First Method
The single most effective technique: type at the speed where you make fewer than 3 errors per minute, then gradually increase.
Rushing creates errors. Errors become habits. Habitual errors are the ceiling.
Test yourself: if your accuracy is below 95%, you are practicing mistakes. Slow down until accuracy is above 97%, hold that speed for one week, then increase by 5 WPM.
Daily Drills That Actually Work
Drill 1 — Weakest key isolation (5 min) After every timed test, note your 3 most error-prone keys. Spend 5 minutes typing words that use only those keys. Rotate daily.
Drill 2 — High-frequency word chunks (5 min)
The 300 most common English words make up 65% of text. Type them as single units until each feels automatic: the, and, that, have, for, are, with, this, will, your.
Drill 3 — Paragraph practice (10 min) Type at comfortable accuracy speed from Typing Practice Paragraphs. No corrections. Forward only.
Tracking Your Progress
| Week | WPM Target | Accuracy Target |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | 30 | 97%+ |
| 3–4 | 38 | 97%+ |
| 5–6 | 45 | 96%+ |
| 7–8 | 52 | 96%+ |
| 9–10 | 60 | 95%+ |
| 11–14 | 70 | 95%+ |
| 15–20 | 80 | 95%+ |
From 60 to 80 WPM — Advanced Techniques
At 60 WPM, basic technique is solid. The limit now is anticipation — reading ahead while typing the current word.
Technique: While typing a word, read the next 2–3 words simultaneously. Your fingers handle the current word; your eyes are already processing what comes next. This eliminates the micro-pauses between words that cap most typists below 80 WPM.
Practice this with long paragraphs. See Typing Practice Paragraphs — Advanced Level.
